UCLA Newsroom:   UCLA has been named the nation’s top public university in the 2017–18 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published today. The report also ranked UCLA No.11 among all American universities—public or private—and No. 15 worldwide. The publication ranked 1,102 of the world’s leading research universities, drawing on 195 data points.

The incoming students represent 46 states and 21 countries (eleven percent are international residents), with 81 students coming from Minnesota, followed by California (61), Illinois (41), Massachusetts (30), Texas (27), and New York (26). Twenty-six students hail from China.

boston.com:   In a joint statement Tuesday, Boston University and nearby Wheelock College announced they were discussing a possible merger. “We believe the merger will enhance Boston University’s programs, as well as preserve the mission of Wheelock College to improve the lives of children and families,” the two schools said. Wheelock is a private college of roughly 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, which houses schools focused on education, social work, and arts and sciences. It is located along the Fens, bordering Brookline, less than a mile south from BU’s campus.

ucsc.edu:   An international training program for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project brought more than 40 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to UC Santa Cruz in August for an eight-day scientific and technical workshop. Workshop participants, representing all of the TMT International Observatory's partners (Canada, China, India, Japan, UC, and Caltech), worked on projects in small teams, visited astronomical laboratory facilities, toured Lick Observatory, and met with numerous scientists and engineers involved in TMT.
